Let's All Join in and Make a Change!

You may be thinking, “What can I possibly do to help save the coral reefs?”
We did some research and found tons of websites that are dedicated to helping save the reefs.

Below is a list of websites that we found to be the best websites for this issue:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has created a top 25 list of things you can do to save the coral reefs.

The Nature Conservancy is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people.

This website allows you to adopt a coral reef

More ways we can help through this website:

  • Become a member of the Nature Conservancy or donate money- which enables them to continue working on a scale that matters and implement solutions that endure
  • Donate online: By giving an online donation you are providing essential funding for conservation initiatives that have been identified as needing the most support.
  • Become a member: By joining the Conservancy today, you will be welcomed into a family of dedicated individuals committed to saving the last great places on Earth.

* We have emailed Abigail Alling, the general information specialist of the Planetary Coral Reef Foundation (PCRF). The Planetary Coral Reef Foundation's mission is to "stop the destruction of the world's coral reefs by 2020 and restore their beauty, health and abundance within this century". The members of the PCRF are amazing people who are doing all they can to help save these amazing coral reefs. We asked Abigail for more information about coral reefs in general and the danger they are in. We also asked her what we could do to help out. We are excited to hear back from her.
If anyone feels as strongly as we do about the coral reef issue and wants to contact a member of the PCRF, click here!!

Reflections thus far:

Danielle's stand on coral reefs
Before this semester I wasn't even aware of the issues with coral reefs.  I think it is so sad to see such beautiful environments/organisms being destroyed.  I am glad I chose to cover the topic of coral reefs because it is an issue that is not generally brought to the public's attention.  I think it is crucial for people to understand that although we cannot exactly see the destruction taking place or feel the consequences immediately, they will  become evident sooner or later and it will be too late!  I feel that this is the issue with our society in general.  We don't see or feel the consequences right away so we don't do anything about the issues that are around us! I am looking forward to researching more on our topic!

Leah's stand on coral reefs:
When we were first given the choice pick a hot topic in current events, I wanted to research something that not many people knew about. I wanted to find something unique that needs to be brought to people's attention. I had heard about the coral reef crisis, but really didn't know much about it. All I knew was that the coral reef was in danger. I did not know how it was in danger, or even that it would affect us or the balance of the underwater ecosystem. The more research we do for this hot topic, the more interested I become about Coral Reefs. I have learned so much already. Now I realize just how important they are, and how big of a deal the coral crisis is. This topic really needs to get more attention in the media. Not many people know about this issue and it is something that will not only affect the ocean life, but our lives as well. We won't see the consequences right away, but we need to be aware that it is a big issue and we need to start doing something about it! Like Danielle said, once the damages start affecting us and becoming more visible, it may be too late!! I am really interested to see what else we can learn about the coral reef crisis and I am happy to share this with all of you and help make everyone aware of this issue.
